Why is my JPG to PDF larger than the original image?
PDF is a container format that wraps your image inside a document structure (page metadata, fonts table, cross-reference index). This overhead is usually 5–20 KB. Additionally, PNG and WebP images are re-rendered as PNG inside the PDF to ensure compatibility, which can produce a larger file than the compressed original. If file size matters, use the Compress PDF tool after conversion to reduce the output — typical PDFs compress by 20–50% without visible quality loss.
How do I convert photos to PDF for a visa or government application?
Most visa portals (US DS-160, Schengen, Indian passport) require a single JPG photo, not a PDF. However, some government job portals and university admissions require photo + signature as a combined PDF. In that case: add your photo image first, then add your signature image below it.
